A Wedding Coordinator's List of What NOT to do When Planning a Wedding

There are many lists of what to do when planning your big day, but sometimes it’s more important to think about; what NOT to do. We, as wedding planners, have seen it all and are happy to share a little insight. You can probably think of a hundred and one “what not to do when planning a wedding,” based on many factors. But here are some general thoughts from our team at It’s Your Day Events:

Don’t break the bank for your special day. We have been wedding coordinators for weddings with all different budgets - your wedding day is as amazing as you make it. Another reason to hire a wedding planner; we are budget pros. Knowing who to hire, how to save, and venues in your price range. Our team is always willing to help in any way!

Don’t feel bad not inviting people; weddings are an investment financially, mentally, and physically. Anyone who has been or is getting married should understand if they don’t receive an invite. During the wedding planning process we suggest that if you have too many people on your list, try separating them into the A, B and C lists. Here is a great article on handling these different lists.

Never overthink guest favors, they seem to be forgotten by most. Keep it simple & small, so it’s easy for the guest take away. Wedding planners always suggest a small heartfelt token of a couples relationship or a small treat that can be enjoyed that night! Another great option, to reduce waste an unwanted knick knacks, is a small donation in each couple's name.

Wedding planning can be intimidating but don’t procrastinate. Procrastination…venues, planner and photographers/videographers are typically the biggest investment when planning a wedding. They also will dictate the style, feel, and overall flow of the night. Think about  your venue first and plan your wedding around that. Different venues provide different services, and may have a preferred vendor list that you have to choose from, or in house catering.

Lastly, but most important. Don’t stress! Have fun. It’s your special day and dance like no one is watching!
